These Documentation explain the rationale for the development of ACGIH’s BEIs which are intended as guidelines for the evaluation of potential chemical exposure health hazards identified in the practice of industrial hygiene. The database for each BEI recommendation consists of available information on absorption, elimination, and metabolism of chemicals, and on the correlation between exposure intensity and biological effect in workers. BEIs are available for acetone, acetylcholinesterase inhibiting pesticides, aniline, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, carbon disulfide, carbon monoxide, chlorobenzene, chromium, cobalt, N,N-dimethylacetamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, ethoxyethanol, ethoxyethanol acetate, ethyl benzene, fluorides, furfural, n-hexane, lead, mercury, methanol, methemoglobin inducers, methoxyethanol, methoxyethanol acetate, methyl chloroform, methylene bis(2-chloroaniline), methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, nitrobenzene, parathion, pentachlorophenol, phenol, styrene (monomer), tetrachloroethylene, tetrahydrofuran, toluene, trichloroethylene, vanadium pentoxide, and xylenes (technical/commercial grade).
